Last update: May 13/22

The Book Info page is where you will enter all of the metadata for the book. Pressbooks will use the information added to the Book Info page to generate a number of automatic pages and statements in webbook and export formats.

More information

  • The author and copyright holder for a book are not always the same. However, Pressbooks creates the licensing statement based on information entered into the “Copyright Holder” field. As such, when the author is different from the copyright holder, the copyright holder field should be left blank.
  • Information entered in the ISBN fields does not appear in the PDF files. A work around is to add this information to the “Copyright Notice” field.
  • Information about who holds copyright should be added to the “Copyright Notice” field to ensure it appears in all formats (see the below template for suggested language).

What to include in the “Copyright Notice” field

See below for suggested language to use in the “Copyright Notice” field on the Book Info page for both a new and adapted open textbook.

There are lots of different information that you can add to the “Copyright Notice” field in Pressbooks. It is fully customizable. We should suggest including the following:

  • The year the resource was published
  • The copyright holder of the work
  • The description of the terms of the licence
  • A description of how to attribute the resource’s creator(s)
  • An example of how to cite the resource
  • An attribution statement for the image used on the textbook’s cover, including links to the image’s source and creator’s home page (if available) and a description of the licence under which the image has been released

Copyright notice for an adapted open textbook

The copyright notice for an open textbook that is adapted is similar to that for an original textbook, with a few exceptions. Items to add are:

  • Information about the original resource, including title, author, copyright holder, publish year, and licence.
  • Information about how the resource has been adapted.
