These are called <strong>pre-reading strategies<\/strong>.\u00a0One pre-reading strategy is called <em>Connect.<\/em>\r\n\r\nFirst you ask: What is the subject of the reading? <strong>Subject<\/strong> is another way of saying \"main topic.\"\r\n\r\nThen you ask: What does this subject remind me of?\r\n\r\nHere is why this strategy works:\r\n\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/abealf3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2015\/02\/connect2.png\"><img src=\"http:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/abealf3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2015\/02\/connect2.png\" alt=\"connect2\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-98 size-full\" height=\"212\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nThe subject\u00a0of the reading in this chapter is the sasquatch. Another name for the sasquatch is Bigfoot.\r\n\r\nWhen you think of a sasquatch, what are you reminded of? You will make a web to show the different ways your mind connects to the word <em>sasquatch<\/em>.\r\n<h2><a id=\"makeaweb\"><\/a>Make a web<\/h2>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">1. Ask your instructor for the <a href=\"http:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/abealf3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2015\/03\/Web1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Make a Web<\/a>\u00a0sheet, or open and print one from the link.\u00a0For this task, use a marker or pen.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">2. Write <em>sasquatch<\/em>\u00a0-- the subject -- in the big shape in the middle.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">3. Knowing lots of word attack strategies helps us make sense of the word. One word attack strategy is to study word patterns. Here are helpful word patterns to know.\r\n<div class=\"bcc-box bcc-success\">\r\n<h3 itemprop=\"educationalUse\">Word Patterns<\/h3>\r\nThe letters -<strong>dge<\/strong> like in <strong>judge<\/strong> make the \/<strong>j<\/strong>\/ sound. The <strong>d<\/strong> is usually silent.\r\n\r\nThe letters -<strong>tch<\/strong> like in <strong>s<\/strong><strong>asquatch<\/strong> make the \/<strong>ch<\/strong>\/ sound. When you write, it helps to know about subjects and verbs. This will help you know whether the sentences you write are complete sentences.\r\n\r\nYou know that a sentence begins with a capital and ends with a period, question mark or exclamation mark. Here is another rule about what every sentence needs.\r\n<div class=\"bcc-box bcc-success\">\r\n<h3 itemprop=\"educationalUse\">Grammar Rule<\/h3>\r\nA sentence needs a subject and a verb.\r\n\r\nThe <strong>subject<\/strong> tells us <em>who<\/em> or <em>what<\/em> the sentence is about.\r\n\r\nThe <strong>verb<\/strong> tells us what the subject is doing. A verb can be an action verb, like <em>run<\/em> or <em>yell<\/em>. A verb can also be a state verb, like <em>be<\/em> or <em>have<\/em>.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"textbox bcc-box\" style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">Study these sentences. The subject of each sentence is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">underlined<\/span>. The verb of each sentence is <strong>bold<\/strong>.\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ostman<\/span> <strong>told<\/strong> a reporter that he was kidnapped by a family of sasquatches.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The sasquatch family<\/span> <strong>held<\/strong> him at their camp.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The sasquatch<\/span> <strong>is<\/strong> a big and hairy beast that looks like an ape.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\">And <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">it<\/span> <strong>smells<\/strong> very, very bad.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Stories of the sasquatch<\/span> <strong>are<\/strong> not new.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h2>Use the sentences above to answer these questions<\/h2>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">1. When you write, it helps to know about subjects and verbs. This will help you know whether the sentences you write are complete sentences.<\/p>\n<p>You know that a sentence begins with a capital and ends with a period, question mark or exclamation mark.
