You looked at the title, pictures, and words from the story to guess what it was about.\r\n\r\nIn this chapter, you will use a pre-reading strategy called <em>Question<\/em>. Asking questions about the topic in the reading helps stir up our interest. But it is made up of two smaller words:<strong>\u00a0gentle<\/strong> and <strong>man<\/strong>. We can guess what the word means by looking at its parts. A man who is gentle might be a man who treats people in a nice way.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Railroad<\/strong> is another big word. But it is made up of two smaller words too:\u00a0<strong>rail<\/strong> and <strong>road<\/strong>. We can guess what the word means by looking at its parts. A road with rails on it might be a train track.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nSometimes two words describe just one thing.\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Prison fence<\/strong> is made of two words that describe just one thing.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h2>Split these big words into smaller words<\/h2>\r\nThen guess what they might mean. In the days before cars, people and goods travelled long ways on horses and trains.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">2. Bill needed to escape.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">3. He slipped across the border into Canada.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">4. He played the fiddle.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">5. He showed people how to dance.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2>Find the verbs in these sentences<\/h2>\r\nChange these sentences to simple past by adding -<strong>ed<\/strong> to the end of the verbs.\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">6. For some verbs, you cannot add -<strong>ed<\/strong> to the end. These verbs are called <strong>irregular verbs<\/strong>.\r\n\r\n<strong>Be<\/strong> is one of these verbs. The simple past forms of <strong>be<\/strong> are <strong>was<\/strong> and <strong>were<\/strong>.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h2>\u00a0Write down the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">subjects<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">verbs<\/span> from these sentences<\/h2>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">12.
