The second letter is a vowel. The third letter is a consonant. These words are called consonant-vowel-consonant words. We call them <strong>CVC <\/strong>words for short.\r\n\r\nWords and syllables with this pattern often have a <strong>short vowel <\/strong>sound. Read these words. This pattern is like the CVC pattern, but it has an <strong>e<\/strong> on the end. So we call them <strong>CVCE<\/strong> words. Here are some examples:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>bone<\/li>\r\n \t<li>cake<\/li>\r\n \t<li>bike<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nCheck that each word above has the consonant-vowel-consonant-e pattern.\r\n\r\nThe<strong> e<\/strong> on the end of these words is sometimes called the <strong>bossy e<\/strong> or the <strong>magic e<\/strong>. That\u2019s because the <strong>e<\/strong> tells the other vowel to make a long sound.\r\n\r\nRead the CVCE words again and notice the long vowel sound. Make a list of the CVCE words.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">Many words begin with two consonants, like <strong>st<\/strong>, <strong>pl<\/strong>, <strong>bl<\/strong>, <strong>wr<\/strong>, <strong>th<\/strong>, <strong>wh<\/strong>, <strong>ph<\/strong>, and <strong>ch<\/strong>. Words that begin with two consonants also follow the CVCE rule.
