Sometimes they want to sell us things. Sometimes they want us to support a cause. It is important that we can make up our minds for ourselves.\r\n\r\nOne way people try to change the way we think is by making their opinion sound like a fact. Can you tell the difference between fact and opinion? If you can, you will be better able to make careful decisions.\r\n\r\nA <strong>fact<\/strong> is something that you know is true. You can prove it. An <strong>opinion<\/strong> is something that you think or believe is true. But you cannot prove it, and people might disagree. For example:\r\n<table style=\"height: 92px\" width=\"537\">\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><span style=\"color: #003366\">In 2006, the BC government made the spirit bear a provincial symbol.<\/span><\/td>\r\n<td><span style=\"color: #008000\">That is a <strong>fact<\/strong>. You can check if it is true with research into BC history.<\/span><\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><span style=\"color: #003366\">The spirit bear is a kind of black bear that has white fur.<\/span><\/td>\r\n<td><span style=\"color: #008000\">That is a<strong> fact<\/strong>. You can prove it with science.<\/span><\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><span style=\"color: #003366\">The spirit bear is cute.<\/span><\/td>\r\n<td><span style=\"color: #008000\">That is an <strong>opinion<\/strong>. You cannot prove it. People disagree on what is cute.<\/span><\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><span style=\"color: #003366\">People should not hunt bears for sport.<\/span><\/td>\r\n<td><span style=\"color: #008000\">That is an <strong>opinion<\/strong>. People disagree about what is right and wrong.\u00a0Also, the word\u00a0<em>should<\/em>\u00a0is a clue that the statement is an opinion.<\/span><\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<h2>Try this<\/h2>\r\nWrite down <i>fact<\/i>\u00a0or o<em>pinion<\/em> for each statement.\u00a0You do not need to go back to the reader to see if these are true or false. It\u2019s made up of ice + cream.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\nKnowing about compound words can help you spell bigger words.
