Each syllable has one vowel sound. For example, cat has one syllable. Catnip has two syllables: <strong>cat<\/strong> + <strong>nip<\/strong>. Syllables follow different patterns. So far, you have learned about simple sentences. A <strong>simple sentence<\/strong> has one subject and one verb. In this lesson, you will study compound sentences.\r\n\r\nA <strong>compound sentence<\/strong> joins two simple sentences together with a comma and one of these words:\r\n<table>\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>and<\/td>\r\n<td>used to add information<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>but<\/td>\r\n<td>used to show contrast<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>or<\/td>\r\n<td>used to show options<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>so<\/td>\r\n<td>used to show the effect of something<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\nThese words are called conjunctions. <strong>Conjunctions<\/strong> are joining words.\r\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #003366\">Turn each pair of simple sentences into one compound sentence. Remember to add a comma and a conjunction. The first one is done for you as an example.<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">1.\u00a0Viola had some free time. These verbs are called <strong>irregular verbs<\/strong>. So far, you have learned about simple sentences. A <strong>simple sentence<\/strong> has one subject and one verb.
