My students tend to have plenty of knowledge of human rights issues from lived experience. These issues are often closely linked to the reasons they find themselves in\u00a0my classroom.\r\n\r\nMy goal with this course pack is to\u00a0provide examples of everyday people who took a stand in everyday ways: refusing to go along with an unfair situation, writing letters, sharing their story, voting, using humour, and starting conversations in the name of social change. These are things we can all do to restore hope, advocate for ourselves, and build the kind of world we want to live in.\r\n\r\nThis theme-based, integrated skills course pack is designed to meet the learning outcomes for Adult Literacy Fundamental English Level 4, as outlined in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aved.gov.bc.ca\/abe\/docs\/handbook.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">ABE in BC 2014\/2015 Articulation Handbook<\/a>.\u00a0This is\u00a0roughly equivalent to grades 4.5 to 6 in the K-12 system.\r\n\r\nThe curriculum in this course pack is based around the readings found in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/abealfreader4\/\">BC Reads: Adult Literacy Fundamental English - Reader 4<\/a><\/em>. The reader\u00a0includes nine level-appropriate, high-interest readings of 400-500 words.\u00a0Convenient links to the readings are embedded in each chapter of this course pack.\r\n\r\nEach chapter of the course pack contains:\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Pre-reading\u00a0questions that can be used for individual reflection, journalling, or class discussion<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Vocabulary-building exercises<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Word Attack Strategies<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Comprehension questions<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Grammar lessons and practice exercises<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Writing tasks<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nFor detailed information, please refer to the <a href=\"http:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/abealf4\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2015\/03\/Level-4-Scope-Sequence.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Level 4 Scope and Sequence<\/a>.\r\n\r\nThis course pack makes use of a number of graphic organizers to help students organize their thoughts in a visual way.
