Study these homonyms. Arrange a date to be tested on your ability to spell these words.\u00a0One way to learn to spell words is to use memorable sentences. If you can remember which spelling goes with which homonym in these sentences, you can use the information to help you spell the homonyms correctly in other sentences.\r\n<div class=\"textbox\">\r\n\r\n<strong>Affect<\/strong>: to act on or change something. Affect is usually used as a verb.\r\n\r\n<strong>Effect<\/strong>: a change that results from something else. I don\u2019t know weather I should drive in this snow.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\" style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #800080\">Check your work with the Answer Key at the end of this chapter.<\/span><\/div>\r\n<h1><span style=\"color: #003366\">Apostrophes in Contractions<\/span><\/h1>\r\n<div class=\"bcc-box bcc-success\">\r\n<h3 itemprop=\"educationalUse\">Grammar Rule<\/h3>\r\nAn apostrophe is used in place of the missing letter or letters in a contraction.\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>We often think people are either born smart or they <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">aren\u2019t<\/span>.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Aren\u2019t = are not<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Intelligence is not something we either have or we don\u2019t have.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Don\u2019t = do not<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>People who thought they couldn\u2019t learn have found out they can.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Couldn\u2019t = could not<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #003366\">Change the underlined words into contractions. Use apostrophes as needed.<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">1. The person chats and asks questions to discover whether <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">they are<\/span> talking to a computer or a person. If a sentence is missing one of these, it is called a <strong>sentence<\/strong> <strong>fragment<\/strong>.\r\n<div class=\"bcc-box bcc-success\">\r\n<h3 itemprop=\"educationalUse\">Grammar Rule<\/h3>\r\nSentence fragments are a common mistake in people\u2019s writing.\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>This sentence is missing a subject: Is the smallest country in the world.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Fixed: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Vatican City<\/span> is the smallest country in the world.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>This sentence is missing a verb: Mount Etna Europe\u2019s tallest active volcano.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Fixed: Mount Etna <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">is<\/span> Europe\u2019s tallest active volcano.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>This sentence is missing a complete thought: Average drivers spend two weeks of their life.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Fixed: Average drivers spend two weeks of their life <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">waiting for traffic lights to change<\/span>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #003366\">Are these complete sentences or fragments?<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">1. A boy.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">2. Typed the English alphabet on an iPad.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">3. In less than six\u00a0seconds.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">4. Astronauts say space has a unique smell.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">5. Hit by lightning.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">6. Barbie\u2019s full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">7. Made a statue of Madonna using 180 pounds of ham.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #003366\">What is missing from these sentence fragments -- a subject, verb, or complete thought?<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">10. Is on Facebook.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">11. The average Facebook user has.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">12. Dyed his sheep bright orange to prevent theft.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">13. Is 5 feet 11 inches.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">14. A calf in Virginia.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">15. Erin Finnegan and Noah Fulmor.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">16. Each sentence fragment above can be matched to another sentence fragment above to make a complete sentence. Find the fragments that go together to make a complete sentence. Use them to write a complete sentence.<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\r\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\" style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #800080\">Check your work with the Answer Key at the end of this chapter.<\/span><\/div>\r\n<h1><span style=\"color: #003366\">Writing <\/span><\/h1>\r\n<strong>How-to paragraphs<\/strong> give directions. For example, this kind of paragraph might explain how to plant a tree, how to make a campfire, or how to send an email.\r\n\r\nA how-to paragraph should:\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Begin with a topic sentence that says what task you are explaining<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Break the task down into small steps<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Explain each step clearly<\/li>\r\n\t<li>List the steps in the order the reader should do them<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Use linking words like <em>first<\/em>, <em>then<\/em>, <em>next<\/em>, <em>after that<\/em>, and <em>finally<\/em><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #003366\">Below is an example of a how-to paragraph. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Underline<\/span> the topic sentence, the linking words, and the concluding sentence.<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>How to Trim a Dragon\u2019s Toenails<\/strong><\/p>\r\nPeople are often afraid to clip the toenails of a dragon, but it\u2019s really not that hard. First, gather all the things you will need: nighttime tea, a tea cup, hedge trimmers, a bumpy rock, and some nail polish. Then, make the dragon a warm cup of nighttime tea. After the dragon drinks the tea, he will fall asleep. Next, pick up the hedge trimmers and carefully cut the top two inches of each toenail. After that, rub the rock back and forth over the edge of each toenail until it is nice and smooth. You may also wish to apply a coat of nail polish. Most dragons prefer red nail polish, but some dragons prefer purple. Finally, run away as fast as you can. The dragon will wake up soon, and you don\u2019t want to be there when he does. The challenge might be something practical, like changing a tire. The challenge may be something complex, like moving to a new country or coping with a divorce. Write a how-to paragraph to help someone who is facing the same challenge you faced.\r\n\r\nFollow\u00a0the TOWER method to write your paragraph. First, <strong>think<\/strong> of some challenges that you handled well. Choose one that you feel good writing about. Next, use the <a href=\"http:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/abealf5\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/86\/2015\/04\/How-To-Paragraph-Planner.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">How To<\/a>\u00a0paragraph planner to\u00a0brainstorm and <strong>organize<\/strong> your ideas. Then, <strong>write<\/strong> a first draft. First, gather all the things you will need: nighttime tea, a tea cup, hedge trimmers, a bumpy rock, and some nail polish. Then, make the dragon a warm cup of nighttime tea. After the dragon drinks the tea, he will fall asleep. Next, pick up the hedge trimmers and carefully cut the top two inches of each toenail.
