There is\u00a0elegance in its simplicity. That is why I chose to make the life and poetry of Langston Hughes the central focus\u00a0of this book.\r\n\r\nThis reader\u00a0contains\u00a0eight\u00a0chapters\u00a0written specifically for adults.\u00a0The chapters take a journey through Langston\u00a0Hughes'\u00a0family history and personal life. I have included excerpts from many of Hughes' poems. I encourage you to locate full versions of these poems in books or on the web. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikisource.org\/wiki\/Author:Langston_Hughes\">Some or all of this author's works<\/a> are in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Public_domain\">public domain<\/a>. During this unit, I also recommend reading Hughes'\u00a0excellent short story <em><a href=\"http:\/\/tlc.cet.ac.il\/ShowItem.aspx?ItemID=bda23ae0-3d15-40c3-a2aa-8f6b99c7a9b5&amp;lang=EN\">Thank You, Ma'am<\/a><\/em> with your students.\r\n\r\nThis level 2 reader, one of a series of six readers, is\u00a0roughly equivalent to Grades 1.5 to 3 in the K-12 system. It is designed to accompany the\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/abealf2\/\">BC Reads: Adult Literacy Fundamental English \u2013 Course Pack\u00a02<\/a><\/em>. For an overview of the contents, please refer to the Scope &amp; Sequence in <a href=\"http:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/abealf2\/back-matter\/appendix-1-scope-sequence\/\">Appendix 2<\/a>.\r\n\r\nThe online version of the course pack\u00a0contains audio recordings of each story\u00a0in the reader. These recordings, combined with vocabulary and word pattern exercises, prepare\u00a0the Level 2 student to read each chapter\u00a0with greater independence.\r\n\r\nDepending on a\u00a0learner\u2019s readiness, you may wish to use the sentences in the Word Pattern sections as dictations.\r\n\r\nI recommend using these books alongside a structured phonics program, such as the Wilson Reading System.\r\n\r\nFont size and line spacing can be adjusted in the online view, and have been enhanced for the print and PDF versions for easier reading. In addition, an <a href=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/abealfreader1\/back-matter\/audio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">audio book<\/a> is available to allow students to listen as they read.
