We may suddenly feel that what we have to say is not interesting\u00a0or important enough to share. But a story doesn\u2019t have to be as <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"668\"]dramatic[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong> as a Hollywood movie to be worth telling. Everyday life is full of <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"724\"]valuable[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong> stories. Lambert recommends the following activities to help you get started:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Choose a story type from the list above. Write whatever comes to mind on that topic for 10 minutes without stopping.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Choose a story type from the list above. Record yourself as you answer the list of questions for that story type. Listen to your recording and write down what you said.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Choose a story type from the list above. Have someone ask you the questions for that topic. Record the conversation. Listen to it and write down what you said.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Draw a map of the neighbourhood you grew up in. Include the layout of the streets, as well as where friends lived, friendly or strange neighbours, stores, school, and so on. What events did this process remind you of?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Look around your house for images that are meaningful to you. Do any images relate to each other? What memories link those images together?<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/div>\r\nThere is a seed of a story somewhere in the thoughts <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"677\"]generated[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong> by these exercises. The key is to start with a small idea. Play with that small idea as though it\u2019s a block of clay. Since school is a learning space rather than a <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"719\"]therapeutic[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong> space, it is important to avoid travelling into emotions you can\u2019t return from. Choose topics that you feel comfortable and natural discussing. Listen to your gut. It will tell you if you are heading\u00a0toward\u00a0feelings that are best explored with a trusted friend or counsellor.<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--exercises\"><header class=\"textbox__header\">\r\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">Digital Story Spotlight<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/header>\r\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\r\n\r\nIn 2012, 20 youth in the Native Youth Enrichment Program at the University of Washington participated in a digital storytelling workshop. Tat\u00e9 BlackBear, a Lakota teenager, was one of the <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"700\"]participants[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong>. The American and Canadian governments tried to erase Aboriginal languages and cultures for over 100 years, so the Lakota have had to work very hard to keep their language alive. There are about 6,000 people who can speak the Lakota language. Tat\u00e9 knew six words in his traditional\u00a0language.\r\n\r\nAs you watch, think about what <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"652\"]category[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong> his story falls into. Lambert recommends the following activities to help you get started:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Choose a story type from the list above. Include the layout of the streets, as well as where friends lived, friendly or strange neighbours, stores, school, and so on. What events did this process remind you of?<\/li>\n<li>Look around your house for images that are meaningful to you. Do any images relate to each other? What memories link those images together?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>There is a seed of a story somewhere in the thoughts <strong><a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_23_677\">generated<\/a><\/strong> by these exercises. The key is to start with a small idea. Play with that small idea as though it\u2019s a block of clay. Since school is a learning space rather than a <strong><a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_23_719\">therapeutic<\/a><\/strong> space, it is important to avoid travelling into emotions you can\u2019t return from. Choose topics that you feel comfortable and natural discussing. Listen to your gut. Tat\u00e9 BlackBear, a Lakota teenager, was one of the <strong><a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_23_700\">participants<\/a><\/strong>. The American and Canadian governments tried to erase Aboriginal languages and cultures for over 100 years, so the Lakota have had to work very hard to keep their language alive. There are about 6,000 people who can speak the Lakota language.
