Introduction to Place Values<\/h1>\r\nEach place in a number has a value.\r\n

Ones<\/h2>\r\nThe ones place tells how many ones there are.\r\n\r\n3 means 3 ones.\r\n

\"Three<\/p>\r\n9 is the largest amount that we can express (write or say) with one digit.\r\n

Tens<\/h2>\r\nThe tens place shows how many tens there are. The ones place must have a digit in it before there can be a digit in the tens place.\r\n\r\nEvery ten is ten ones.\r\n\r\n\"A \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \"10\r\n\r\n43 means 4 tens and 3 ones\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\n99 means 9 tens and 9 ones. 99 is the largest amount that we can express (write or say) using only two digits.\r\n

Hundreds<\/h2>\r\nThe place to the left of the tens place is the hundreds place. It shows how many hundreds there are. A number written using three whole digits has a hundreds place, a tens place, and a ones place.\r\n\r\nEvery hundred is ten tens \u2014 every hundred is the same as one hundred ones.\r\n

Thousands<\/h2>\r\nThe place to the left of the hundreds place is the thousands place.\r\n\r\nOne thousand is the same as ten hundreds.\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\nOne thousand is the same as one hundred tens.\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\nOne thousand is the same as one thousand ones. (You will have to imagine the picture of the one thousand ones!)\r\n

Thousands Separator: Use a Space<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/header>\r\n

\r\n\r\nWhen we write numerals, a little space is left between the thousands place and the hundreds place. The space makes it easier to read large numerals.\r\n

      Ten thousands<\/h2>\r\nThe place value to the left of thousands is ten thousands. As you can tell by the name, one ten thousand is ten thousands. You are not going to get a sketch of these large place values because the page isn\u2019t big enough!\r\n

          Hundred thousands<\/h2>\r\nHave you heard the expression, \u201cThey have a 6 figure salary.\u201d That means they earn at least one hundred thousand dollars, which takes six digits to write! The place value to the left of ten thousands is hundred thousands. There is definitely not room on the page for a picture of this place value!           Millions<\/h2>\r\nAnd if we look one more place to the left, the place value is millions. One million is 1 with six zeros after it: 1 000 000.\r\n\r\nA space is left between the millions place and the hundred thousands place.             Place values overview<\/h2>\r\nThis place value chart may help you to remember the place values.\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\nNotice the groups of three digits. Look at the pattern for the three places which is repeated in each place value group \u2013 the pattern is hundreds, tens, ones.\r\n
            Our number system is called a decimal system because it is based on the number ten. Deci<\/em> is a Latin word that means ten.                     Reading and Writing Numerals<\/h1>\r\nYou know that the digits are 0 1 2 3 4 5\u00a0 6\u00a0 7\u00a0 8\u00a0 9\u00a0 and that digits are arranged in different places so we can count larger amounts than our ten fingers!\r\n\r\nWhen we use digits, we call what we write the \"numeral.\"\r\n
