The Graphic window is used most of the time when you are working in AutoCAD.\n\n[caption id=\"attachment_140\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"460\"]<img class=\"wp-image-79\" src=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/accessibilitytoolkit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/375\/2020\/10\/Fig-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"350\"> Figure 1-1[\/caption]\n<h2>Crosshairs and Graphic Cursor<\/h2>\nThe <em><span style=\"color: #ec0000\">crosshairs<\/span> <\/em>indicates your current location on the Graphic window or in 2D space. If you were drawing by hand, think of it as the point of your pencil. It is one of AutoCAD's most important features and is used extensively when you are creating drawings. See Figure 1-1, and 1-3.\n\nWhen you move the crosshairs onto a menu item, it will change its display to the <em><span style=\"color: #ec0000\">Graphic cursor<\/span><\/em> as shown in Figure 1-2. You use it to select menu items.\n\n[caption id=\"attachment_140\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"45\"]<img class=\"wp-image-302 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/accessibilitytoolkit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/375\/2021\/11\/Figure-1-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"45\" height=\"49\"> Figure 1-2[\/caption]\n\nPickbox\n\nThe <em><span style=\"color: #ec0000\">pickbox<\/span> <\/em>is a small square located at the intersection of the crosshairs as shown in Figure 1-3. It is used to pick drawing objects.\n\n[caption id=\"attachment_140\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"140\"]<img class=\"wp-image-81\" src=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/accessibilitytoolkit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/375\/2021\/11\/Fig-1-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"140\" height=\"125\"> Figure 1-3[\/caption]\n<h2>Status Bar<\/h2>\nThe <em><span style=\"color: #ec0000\">Status bar<\/span><\/em>, Figure 1-4, is positioned across the bottom of the Graphic window and becomes a very important part of your day-to-day AutoCAD work.\n\n[caption id=\"attachment_140\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"638\"]<img class=\"wp-image-82 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/accessibilitytoolkit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/375\/2021\/11\/Fig-1-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"638\" height=\"24\"> Figure 1-4[\/caption]\n\nThe coordinate location or the XYZ coordinates of the current location of the crosshairs is displayed near the center of the Status bar. The coordinate location display can be enabled or disabled by clicking it with the left mouse button. Toggle buttons for AutoCAD's features are located immediately to the right of the coordinate display. Many of these features will be taught in the AutoCAD 2D book.\n<h2>Model and Layout Tabs<\/h2>\nThe <em><span style=\"color: #ec0000\">Model and Layout tabs<\/span><\/em>, Figure 1-5, are used to toggle the display of Model space or one of the layouts. This will be discussed in greater detail in Module 18.\n\n[caption id=\"attachment_140\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"252\"]<img class=\"wp-image-83 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/accessibilitytoolkit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/375\/2021\/11\/Fig-1-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"252\" height=\"28\"> Figure 1-5[\/caption]\n\n<div class=\"textbox\"><strong>USER TIP:<\/strong> The size of the crosshairs can be changed. For the AutoCAD 2D book and most other AutoCAD work, it is best to have them full screen as shown in Figure 1-1.<\/div>\n<h1>AutoCAD's Menu Systems<\/h1>\n<div class=\"textbox author\"><strong>AUTHOR'S COMMENTS:<\/strong> AutoCAD has two basic menu systems, Toolbars and Ribbons. You can switch back and forth between them. Along with using either the Toolbar or Ribbon menu, you should enable the Pull-down menu and use it in conjunction with either menu. The AutoCAD 2D book shows all three menus. I advise the beginner to use the Toolbar menus while working on the AutoCAD 2D book and then try the Ribbon menu after completing it.<\/div>\nAutoCAD has two different menu systems that allows you to communicate with it. The two menu systems that you can choose from are the Toolbar menus and the Ribbon menus. See Figure 1-6. Place the Graphic cursor on the triangle to force the Flyout menu to display as shown in Figure 1-9.\n\n[caption id=\"attachment_140\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"367\"]<img class=\"wp-image-88 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/accessibilitytoolkit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/375\/2021\/11\/Fig-1-9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"367\" height=\"136\"> Figure 1-9 Flyout Menu[\/caption]\n<h2>Toolbar Menus<\/h2>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ec0000\">Toolbar menus<\/span><\/em> are a series of icons that are located on a collection of menu bars. See Figure 1-10. The display of each toolbar can be enabled or disabled at your discretion. If they were all displayed at the same time, they would virtually fill the Graphic window. Therefore, their display must be enabled or disabled, as required, by the current operation in the drawing.\n\nToolbars can float inside the Graphic window or they can be docked along any one of its four sides. If the Graphic cursor is placed on an icon in a toolbar, a <span style=\"color: #ec0000\"><em>tooltip <\/em><\/span>will display indicating the purpose of the icon as shown in Figure 1-11. AutoCAD allows you to create or edit existing toolbar menus. This is taught in the AutoCAD 2D Advanced book.\n\n[caption id=\"attachment_140\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"139\"]<img class=\"wp-image-89 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/accessibilitytoolkit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/375\/2021\/11\/Fig-1-10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"139\" height=\"32\"> Figure 1-10 An AutoCAD Toolbar[\/caption]\n\n&nbsp;\n\n[caption id=\"attachment_140\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"229\"]<img class=\"wp-image-90 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/accessibilitytoolkit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/375\/2021\/11\/Fig-1-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"229\" height=\"145\"> Figure 1-11 A Toolbar Menu - Showing a Tooltip[\/caption]\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left\">Docked and Floating Toolbar Menus<\/h3>\nIn Figure 1-8, the toolbars across the top of the Graphic window are <em><span style=\"color: #ec0000\">docked<\/span> <\/em>and the ones in the centre are <em><span style=\"color: #ec0000\">floating<\/span><\/em>.\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left\">Displaying Toolbar Menus<\/h3>\nTo enable or disable the display of a toolbar menu, place the Graphic cursor on any icon on a currently displayed toolbar and right-click the mouse. A list of all the available toolbar menus will display as shown in Figure 1-12. Click the name on the toolbar menu to toggle its display. A checkmark beside the toolbar's name indicates that it is currently displayed in the Graphic window.\n\n[caption id=\"attachment_140\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"268\"]<img class=\"wp-image-91 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/accessibilitytoolkit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/375\/2021\/11\/Fig-1-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"788\"> Figure 1-12 Toolbar Menu Pull-down[\/caption]\n<h1>Dialogue Boxes and Windows<\/h1>\nWhen a menu item has 3 dots after it as shown in Figure 1-13 it indicates that there is more. When clicked, it will open a dialogue box or a window.\n\n[caption id=\"attachment_140\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"197\"]<img class=\"wp-image-92 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/accessibilitytoolkit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/375\/2021\/11\/Fig-1-13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"197\" height=\"164\"> Figure 1-13 Pull Down Menu - More[\/caption]\n<h2>Dialogue Boxes<\/h2>\nAutoCAD uses many different dialogue boxes to speed the drawing process. A<span style=\"color: #ec0000\"> <em>dialogue box <\/em><\/span>is an effective and efficient method for AutoCAD to allow you to modify or enter information, settings, and sizes. While a dialogue box is open, no other work can be done in the current drawing. It must be closed before continuing to the next command. If you close a dialogue box by clicking the X in the top right corner, it will cancel your current input in the box. If you want to save your input, you must click the OK button. A typical dialogue box is shown in Figure 1-14.\n\n[caption id=\"attachment_140\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"310\"]<img class=\"wp-image-93 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/accessibilitytoolkit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/375\/2021\/11\/Fig-1-14.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"310\" height=\"365\"> Figure 1-14 A Dialogue Box[\/caption]\n<h2>Windows<\/h2>\nAutoCAD uses many different <em><span style=\"color: #ec0000\">windows<\/span> <\/em>to speed the drawing process. Compared to a dialogue box, a window is a more efficient method for AutoCAD and you to communicate. Windows are interactive and display data and information about the current drawing or objects in that drawing as the drawing is being worked on. Unlike a dialogue box, a window updates automatically and can remain on the screen as you work on the drawing. You must close a window by clicking the X in the upper corner. This will not cancel you input. A typical window is shown in Figure 1-15.\n\n[caption id=\"attachment_140\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"241\"]<img class=\"wp-image-94 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/accessibilitytoolkit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/375\/2021\/11\/Fig-1-15.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"241\" height=\"326\"> Figure 1-15 AutoCAD\u2019s Property Window[\/caption]\n\nCommand Line Window\n\n&nbsp;\n\nThe <span style=\"color: #ec0000\"><em>Command Line window <\/em><\/span>is used, by you, to enter keyboard commands and user inputs. It is also used by AutoCAD to output information to you. See Figure 1-16. It is one of the ways that you communicate with AutoCAD and is a very important way for AutoCAD to communicate with you. It is important for you to watch this window closely when you are drawing. It is used by AutoCAD to ask for information, instruct you to what data it requires, or display answers to your inquiries. This will be discussed in much greater detail in Module 2.\n\n[caption id=\"attachment_140\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"454\"]<img class=\"wp-image-95 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/accessibilitytoolkit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/375\/2021\/11\/Fig-1-16.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"454\" height=\"61\"> Figure 1-16 Command Line Window[\/caption]\n<h2>Text Window<\/h2>\nThe <span style=\"color: #ec0000\"><em>Text window<\/em><\/span>, Figure 1-17, displays all of the commands that were entered by you and AutoCAD's responses to those command for the duration that the current drawing is open. This is one way for you to look back at the commands, user input, and AutoCAD's responses. To toggle the display of the Text window, press F2.\n\n[caption id=\"attachment_140\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"506\"]<img class=\"wp-image-96 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/accessibilitytoolkit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/375\/2021\/11\/Fig-1-17.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"506\" height=\"199\"> Figure 1-17 AutoCAD\u2019s Text Window[\/caption]\n<h1>The Mouse<\/h1>\nAutoCAD is programed to use the three buttons on a mouse as follows:\n\n<strong>Left Button: <\/strong>This is the pick button. Use it to pick objects, pick menu items, or to select locations on the drawing.\n\n<strong>Middle Button: <\/strong>The middle button, or wheel, is used to zoom and pan around the drawing. This will be discussed in detail in Module 9.\n\n<strong>Right Button: <\/strong>The right button has two uses. If pressed and released quickly, it repeats the last command. If pressed and held in, it displays the cursor menu. AutoCAD's blank window will display. For the AutoCAD 2D book and most other AutoCAD work, it is best to have them full screen as shown in Figure 1-1.<\/div>\n<h1>AutoCAD&#8217;s Menu Systems<\/h1>\n<div class=\"textbox author\"><strong>AUTHOR&#8217;S COMMENTS:<\/strong> AutoCAD has two basic menu systems, Toolbars and Ribbons. You can switch back and forth between them. Along with using either the Toolbar or Ribbon menu, you should enable the Pull-down menu and use it in conjunction with either menu. The AutoCAD 2D book shows all three menus. I advise the beginner to use the Toolbar menus while working on the AutoCAD 2D book and then try the Ribbon menu after completing it.<\/div>\n<p>AutoCAD has two different menu systems that allows you to communicate with it. The two menu systems that you can choose from are the Toolbar menus and the Ribbon menus. See Figure 1-6. Compared to a dialogue box, a window is a more efficient method for AutoCAD and you to communicate.<\/li>\n<li>AutoCAD is programed to use the three buttons on a mouse.
