It provides foundational mental health and wellness training for faculty and staff to build their knowledge and confidence to support students in distress. Through this course, learners will:\n<ul>\n \t<li>Explore different mental health and wellness models<\/li>\n \t<li>Consider ways to promote resilience<\/li>\n \t<li>Learn how to recognize and respond to a student in distress and how to refer a student to supports on campus or in the community<\/li>\n \t<li>Complete practice scenarios to help them apply and get feedback on their knowledge and skills<\/li>\n \t<li>Consider how to maintain boundaries and practise self-care when supporting a student in distress<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nWhile this course covers how to refer a student who is having a mental health emergency or crisis to appropriate resources, this course does not address suicide awareness, which requires more in-depth training. BCcampus has developed a facilitator-led courses on suicide awareness. For more information, see the <a href=\"https:\/\/bccampus.ca\/projects\/wellness\/mental-health-and-wellness\/\">BCcampus Mental Health and Wellness<\/a>.\n\n<em>Capacity to Connect: Supporting Students\u2019 Mental Health<\/em> <em>(for Faculty and Staff)<\/em> was adapted from the BCcampus synchronous resource <a href=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/capacitytoconnect\/\"><em>Capacity to Connect: Supporting Students\u2019 Mental Health and Wellness<\/em><\/a>, which is a facilitator\u2019s guide for delivering in-person or online mental health and wellness training to post-secondary faculty and staff.\n\nThe asynchronous, self-paced version of the course was developed to meet the needs of post-secondary institutions unable to reach all learners through synchronous workshops. It covers the same concepts and has the same learning outcomes as the synchronous, facilitated version of the course.\n\nBoth versions of the <em>Capacity to Connect<\/em> courses were developed with guidance from an advisory group of students, staff, and faculty from B.C. post-secondary institutions. The courses were also developed in close collaboration with an Indigenous advisor, and Indigenous knowledge about mental health has been integrated into all the materials.\n<h1>Key Principles<\/h1>\nThis course was developed following the six key principles identified in the <a href=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/mhwframework\/\">Framework for Evaluating Mental Health and Wellness Education and Training Resources<\/a>.
