competitor.[\/footnote]\u00a0you through the market-place;\r\nMan and boy stood cheering by,\r\nAnd home we brought you shoulder-high.\r\n\r\nTo-day, the road all runners come,\r\nShoulder-high we bring you home,\r\nAnd set you at your threshold down,\r\nTownsman of a stiller town.\r\n\r\nSmart lad, to slip betimes[footnote]Early.[\/footnote]\u00a0away\r\nFrom fields where glory does not stay,\r\nAnd early though the laurel[footnote]Foliage used by the ancient Greeks to crown victors at the Pythian games, hence to crown with laurel, to honour.[\/footnote]\u00a0grows\r\nIt withers
