This need arises when trying to take an even root, such as the square root of a negative number. To accomplish this, mathematicians have created what are termed imaginary and complex numbers.\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">[latex]\\text{Definition of Imaginary Numbers: }i^2 = -1, \\text{ thus }i = (-1)^{\\frac{1}{2}} \\text{ or } \\sqrt{-1}[\/latex]<\/p>\r\nFrom this, notice that:\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">[latex]\\begin{array}{rrl}\r\n\\phantom{0}[(-1)^{\\frac{1}{2}}]^2&amp;=&amp; \\dots (-1)^2=1\r\n\\end{array}[\/latex]<\/p>\r\nNotice: This is a repeating pattern of the exponent 4.\r\n\r\nExamples of imaginary numbers include [latex]3i[\/latex], [latex]-6i[\/latex], [latex]35i[\/latex] and [latex]3i\\sqrt{5}[\/latex].\r\n\r\nComplex numbers are ones that contains both real and imaginary parts, such as [latex]2 + 5i[\/latex].\r\n\r\nWith this algebraic creation, even powered roots of negative numbers are no longer undefined and should now be able to do basic operations with any root having negatives.\r\n\r\nFirst, consider exponents on imaginary numbers, where the easiest way to reduce them is to divide the exponent by 4.\r\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--examples\"><header class=\"textbox__header\">\r\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">Example 9.91<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/header>\r\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\r\n\r\nReduce the imaginary number [latex]i^{35}[\/latex].\r\n\r\nFirst, take the power 35 and divide it by 4.\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">35 \u00f7 4 yields 8\u00be<\/p>\r\nThe 8 is irrelevant in this solution, since [latex]i^{35}[\/latex] is the same as [latex]i^3[\/latex].\r\n\r\n[latex][(-1)^{\\frac{1}{2}}]^{35} = (-1)^{\\frac{3}{2}} = 1 (-1)^{\\frac{1}{2}}\\text{ or }1\\sqrt{-1}[\/latex]\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--examples\"><header class=\"textbox__header\">\r\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">Example 9.9.2<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/header>\r\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\r\n\r\nReduce the imaginary number [latex]i^{124}[\/latex].\r\n\r\nFirst, take the power 124 and divide it by 4.\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">124 \u00f7 4 yields 31<\/p>\r\nThe 8 becomes irrelevant in this solution, since [latex]i^{124}[\/latex] is the same as [latex]i^4[\/latex] or [latex]i^0[\/latex].\r\n\r\n[latex][(-1)^{\\frac{1}{2}}]^{124} = (-1)^{\\frac{4}{2}} = (-1)^2\\text{ or }1[\/latex]\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\nWhen performing operations such as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing with complex radicals, work with [latex]i[\/latex] just like it was handled previous polynomials. If you have [latex]i[\/latex] or [latex](-1)^{\\frac{1}{2}}[\/latex] in the denominator, then there is a radical in the denominator, which means that it will need to be rationalized.
