{"id":93,"date":"2019-02-08T22:20:14","date_gmt":"2019-02-09T03:20:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/introconsumerbehaviour\/chapter\/branding\/"},"modified":"2021-06-01T17:34:15","modified_gmt":"2021-06-01T21:34:15","slug":"branding","status":"publish","type":"chapter","link":"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/introconsumerbehaviour\/chapter\/branding\/","title":{"raw":"Branding","rendered":"Branding"},"content":{"raw":"<div>\n\nA <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"241\"]brand[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong> consists of any name, term, design, style, words, symbols or any other feature that distinguishes the goods and services of one seller from another. A brand also distinguishes one product from another in the eyes of the customer. All of its elements (i.e., logo, colour, shape, letters, images) work as a psychological trigger or stimulus that causes an association to all other thoughts we have about this brand. Jingles, celebrities, and catchphrases are also oftentimes considered brands.\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The word \u201cbrand\u201d is derived from the Old Norse \u2018brand\u2019 meaning \u201cto burn,\u201d which refers to the practice of producers burning their mark (or brand) onto their products. Italians are considered among the first to use brands in the form of watermarks on paper in the 1200s. However, in mass-marketing, this concept originated in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century with the introduction of packaged goods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">During the Industrial Revolution, the production of many household items, such as soap, was moved from local communities to centralized factories to be mass-produced and sold to the wider market. When shipping their items, factories branded their <em>logo<\/em> or insignia on the barrels used, thereby extending the meaning of \u201cbrand\u201d to that of trademark. This enabled the packaged goods manufacturers to communicate that their products should be trusted as much as local competitors. Campbell's Soup, Coca-Cola, Juicy Fruit gum, Aunt Jemima, and Quaker Oats were among the first products to be \u201cbranded.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\" data-wp-editing=\"1\">\n\n[caption id=\"attachment_1727\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"1024\"]<img class=\"wp-image-1727 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/accessibilitytoolkit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/349\/2019\/02\/drz-__-UtbFfsFYVMQ-unsplash-scaled-1.jpg\" alt=\"Collage featuring vintage Coca-Cola logos on various products and memorabilia.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\"> The Coca-Cola logo is an example of a widely-recognized trademark and global brand.[\/caption]\n\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Branding is crucial to the success of any tangible product. In consumer markets, branding can influence whether consumers will buy the product. Branding can also help in the development of a new product by facilitating the extension of a product line or mix, through building on the consumer\u2019s perceptions of the values and character represented by the brand name.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\">\n\n[caption id=\"attachment_2690\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"1024\"]<img class=\"wp-image-2690 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/accessibilitytoolkit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/349\/2021\/06\/drz-__-DpaZr8hPSQs-unsplash-scaled-1.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of a diamond engagement ring against a robin's egg blue box that is presumably the brand, Tiffany's\" width=\"1024\" height=\"603\"> An elegant diamond engagement ring packaged in a \"robin's egg\" blue box is representative of a well-known luxurious jewellery brand retailer.[\/caption]\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\nThe goal when developing a brand is to create value. You do that by emulating the characteristics and values that your customers desire. Branding is present throughout everything your organization touches\u2014it is not just a logo. Every design shown and communication made to the consumer are examples of branding.\n<h1>Branding Attributes<\/h1>\nBrands have intrinsic and extrinsic attributes. <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"255\"]Intrinsic attributes[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong> refer to functional characteristics of the brand: its shape,\u00a0performance, and physical\u00a0capacity\u00a0(e.g. Gillette razors shave unwanted hair and are able to do so more closely than most products in their product class because of their curved shape). Should any of these attributes be changed, they will not function in the same way or be the same product.\n\nExamples of <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"250\"]extrinsic attributes[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong> are features like the\u00a0price of the Gillette razors, their packaging, the Gillette brand name, and mechanisms that enable consumers to form associations that give meaning to the brand. For example, it can appear more desirable because David Beckham, who is a brand himself, advertises it.\n\nSome refer to a brand's function as the creation and communication of a multidimensional character of a product\u2014one that is not easily copied and damaged by competitors' efforts.\n\nBrands have different elements, namely brand personality (functional abilities), brand skill (its fundamental traits\u2014e.g. Chanel No 5 is seen as sexy) and brand relationships (with buyers) or brand magic. These elements are what give the brand added value.\n\nMarketing and\u00a0advertising\u00a0are about selling your products and\u00a0services. Branding is about selling everything associated with your organization . The consumer perception of brands is brand knowledge: <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"244\"]brand awareness[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong>, recognition and recall, and brand image denote how consumers perceive a brand based on quality and attitudes towards it and what stays in their memory.\n<h1>Successful Brand Strategies<\/h1>\nA successful brand can create and sustain a strong, positive, and lasting impression in the mind of a consumer. Brands provide external cues to taste, design, performance, quality, value, and prestige if they are developed and managed properly. Brands convey positive or negative messages about a product, along with indicating the company or service to the consumer, which is a direct result of past advertising, promotion, and product reputation.\n\nAccording to brand experts, marketers should be paying attention to the associations consumers develop in connection to a brand. <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"242\"]Brand associations[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong> are considered to be anything (e.g., sounds, smells, words, and images) that can be linked to a brand and is held in memory by consumers. Brand associations can be positive or negative depending on a consumer's direct experiences or impressions of a brand. Low and Lamb Jr (2000) tell us that brand associations are critical for marketers because they help establish differentiation, market position, and brand strategies including product line extensions. A successful organization also recognizes that brand associations are made at each point of contact: customer service calls; greetings from a receptionist; conversations with a sales person. Each of these touch points leaves a lasting impression on a consumer and can be held in memory for a long time. For that reason, an organization's brand strategy should consider the impact employees at all levels will have on brand associations.\n\nLearn more about how attributes, benefits, values, culture, personality, and the user all factored into a brand strategy. The example below has been designed for automobile brand, Mercedes Benz: how might you apply a different brand to these 6 factors?\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\">\n\n<strong>Six Levels of Meaning in a Brand Strategy<\/strong>\n<div class=\"h5p\">[h5p id=\"10\"]<\/div>\n<div class=\"pdf\">\n<ul>\n \t<li>Attributes: A brand's set of attributes communicates to its audience how the brand should be perceived and positioned.\n<em>The Mercedes-Benz brand, for example, suggests expensive, well-built, well-engineered, durable, high-prestige automobiles.<\/em><\/li>\n \t<li>Benefits: A brand's set of attributes must be translated into both functional and emotional benefits for the consumer.\n<em>For some drivers, purchasing a Mercedes gives them a personal sense of success, accomplishment, and pride.<\/em><\/li>\n \t<li>Values: Consumers seek brands with attributes that align with their own set of personal values.\n<em>Mercedes stands for high performance, safety, and prestige.<\/em><\/li>\n \t<li>Culture: A set of brand attributes can communicate and represent a broader set of cultural characteristics that are meaningful to consumers.\n<em>Mercedes represents German culture and thereby represents cultural characteristics of organization, efficiency, and high quality.<\/em><\/li>\n \t<li>Personality: Over time, a brand can project its own distinguishable kind of personality. Some brands may be \"quirky\" or \"casual,\" \"edgy\" or \"intense\".\n<em>Mercedes' personality may be described as sophisticated, serious, buttoned-up, and achievement-oriented.<\/em><\/li>\n \t<li>User: Every brand is designed with a particular type of user in mind: through its various attributes, a brand suggests who that user might be and what makes them attracted to the brand.\n<em>A Mercedes-Benz driver strives to be taken seriously in everything they do. They approach their work with a growth-mentality and are committed to being successful, hard-working, and results-oriented.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"solomon-ch08_s01_f01\" class=\"figure medium editable block\">\n<h1 id=\"solomon-ch08_s01_s04\" class=\"section\">Benefits of a Brand<\/h1>\nA brand is the personality that identifies a product, service or company (name, term, sign, symbol, design, or combination thereof); it also represents a relationship to key constituencies: customers, staff, partners, investors etc. Proper branding can yield higher product sales, and higher sales of products associated with the brand (or brand association). For example, a customer who loves Pillsbury biscuits (and trusts the brand) is more likely to try other products the company offers, such as chocolate chip cookies.\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--key-takeaways\"><header class=\"textbox__header\">\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">Why Be Generic When You Can Be Branded?<\/p>\n\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">Consumers may view branding as an aspect of products or services, as it often serves to denote certain attractive qualities or characteristics. From the perspective of brand owners, branded products or services also command higher prices. Where two products resemble each other, but one of the products has no associated branding (such as a generic, store-branded product), people may often select the more expensive branded product on the basis of the quality or reputation of the brand or brand owner. Benefits of good brand recognition include facilitating of new product acceptance, enabling market share penetration by advertising, and resisting price erosion.<\/div>\n<\/div>\nSome people distinguish the psychological aspect of brand associations (e.g., thoughts, feelings, perceptions, images, experiences, beliefs, attitudes, etc.) that become tied to the brand from the experiential aspect\u2014the sum of all points of contact with the brand, otherwise known as <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"274\"]brand experience[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong>. Brand experience is a brand's action perceived by a person. The psychological aspect, sometimes referred to as the\u00a0<strong>[pb_glossary id=\"245\"]brand image[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong>, is a symbolic construct created within the minds of people, consisting of all the information and expectations associated with a product, service, or company providing them .\n\nEffective branding of a product also enables the consumer to easily identify the product because the features and benefits have been communicated effectively. This will increase the probability that the product will be accessible and therefore purchased and consumed. Dunkin\u2019 Donuts (<em>rebranded now as just, \"Dunkin'\"<\/em>), for example, is a brand that has an established logo and imagery that is familiar to most consumers. The vivid colors and image of a DD cup are easily recognized and distinguished from competitors.\n\nBranding helps create loyalty, decreases the risk of losing market share to the competition by establishing a differential advantage, and allow premium pricing that is acceptable by the consumer because of the perceived value of the brand. Good branding also allows for effective targeting and positioning. For example, Adidas is a brand known its athletic and fashionable clothing, sporting equipment, and footwear. Adidas has a global brand community due to its established global branding that communicates value.\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\">\n\n[caption id=\"attachment_1731\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"205\"]<img class=\"wp-image-1731 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/accessibilitytoolkit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/349\/2021\/06\/jakob-owens-HGqAIGg1Qcs-unsplash-scaled-1.jpg\" alt=\"Person's foot, wearing Addidas Superstar shoes; white with black stripes.\" width=\"205\" height=\"300\"> The Adidas logo is widely recognized around the world for sports apparel, clothing, and footwear.[\/caption]\n\n<\/div>\n<h2>Brand Loyalty<\/h2>\n<\/div>\nIn marketing, <strong>[pb_glossary id=\"246\"]brand loyalty[\/pb_glossary]<\/strong> refers to a consumer\u2019s commitment to repurchase or otherwise continue using a particular brand by repeatedly buying a product or service. The American Marketing Association (\"AMA\") defines brand loyalty as: \"[t]he situation in which a consumer generally buys the same manufacturer-originated product or service repeatedly over time rather than buying from multiple suppliers within the category\" (MBN, n.d.). This is expressed as a form of \"habit-buying\" where consumers purchase the same brand due to a \"lack of dissatisfaction\" (MBN, n.d.). Brand loyalty, however, is not just a form of habit-buying, but also the result of the relationship consumers build with a brand resulting in repeat and dedicated purchases that provide a deeper sense of personal fulfillment and satisfaction.\n\nAside from a consumer\u2019s willingness or even desire to repurchase a brand, true brand loyalty exists when a consumer is committed to the brand, and when a consumer has a high relative attitude toward the brand, which is then exhibited through repurchase behaviour. For example, if Micah has brand loyalty to Company A, they will purchase Company A\u2019s products even if Company B\u2019s products are cheaper and\/or of a higher quality.\n\nBrand loyalty is viewed as a multidimensional construct, determined by several distinct psychological processes, such as the customers\u2019 perceived value, brand trust, satisfaction, repeat purchase behaviour, and commitment. Commitment and repeat purchase behaviour are considered as necessary conditions for brand loyalty, followed by perceived value, satisfaction, and brand trust.\n\nPhilip Kotler (2016) defines four customer-types that exhibit similar patterns of behaviour:\n<ul>\n \t<li><em>Hardcore Loyals<\/em>, who buy the brand all the time;<\/li>\n \t<li><em>Split Loyals<\/em>, loyal to two or three brands;<\/li>\n \t<li><em>Shifting Loyals<\/em>, moving from one brand to another;<\/li>\n \t<li><em>Switchers<\/em>, with no loyalty (possibly \u201cdeal-prone,\u201d constantly looking for bargains, or \u201cvanity prone,\u201d looking for something different).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nThe benefits of brand loyalty are longer tenure (or staying a customer for longer), and lower sensitivity to price. Recent research found evidence that longer-term customers were indeed less sensitive to price increases. According to Andrew Ehrenberg, consumers buy \u201cportfolios of brands.\u201d They switch regularly between brands, often because they simply want a change. Thus, \u201cbrand penetration\u201d or \u201cbrand share\u201d reflects only a statistical chance that the majority of customers will buy that brand next time as part of a portfolio of brands. It does not guarantee that they will stay loyal.\n\nBy creating promotions and loyalty programs that encourage the consumer to take some sort of action, companies are building brand loyalty by offering more than just an advertisement. Offering incentives like big prizes creates an environment in which customers see the advertiser as more than just the advertiser. Individuals are far more likely to come back to a company that uses interesting promotions or loyalty programs than a company with a static message of \u201cbuy our brand because we\u2019re the best.\u201d\n<div id=\"solomon-ch08_s01_s04\" class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--key-takeaways\"><header class=\"textbox__header\">\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">Branding Beyond Consumerism<\/p>\n\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\n\nBranding is a dirty word for many activists, but it really just means \u201cthe set of expectations, memories, stories, and relationships that, taken together, account for a consumer\u2019s decision to choose one product or service over another\" (Godin, 2009). If we take branding out of the realm of consumption and into the interplay of ideas in the public sphere, then we see that the tools of branding can be used for more than just selling soap.\n\nThree important points to keep in mind about branding:\n<ol>\n \t<li><em>Branding isn\u2019t inherently \u201ccorporate.\u201d<\/em> Branding is really nothing more than a set of proven principles for associating, in the collective imagination, a certain word, phrase or image with a set of emotions or ideas. There\u2019s nothing inherently capitalist about that. Corporations use branding because it works. Anti-corporate activists can use it, too.<\/li>\n \t<li><em>Branding can make the difference between success and failure.<\/em> Every movement wants its message to be heard, but simply being right won\u2019t sell your ideas. The human mind needs to be persuaded.<\/li>\n \t<li><em>There are copious examples of movements using branding effectively.<\/em> In the \u201990s, for instance, an adherence to a certain aesthetic helped unify the Otpor! youth movement that swept Serbia and ousted Slobodan Milo\u0161evic.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\nWhatever the context, if you craft your message for your intended audience, then that audience will want to know more. It\u2019s as simple as engaging people in a dialogue that appeals to them. If they feel you aren\u2019t talking to them, they\u2019ll ignore you \u2014 or worse, work against you.\n\nYou\u2019ll be branded whether you like it or not, so be proactive. Even conspicuously \u201cunbranded\u201d campaigns have a brand. Despite its efforts to avoid defining itself, the Occupy movement ended up with an effective brand when the \u201c99%\u201d meme organically emerged as the touchstone for people within and outside the movement.\n\nIf you decline to brand yourself, you leave an opening for other people \u2014 including enemies \u2014 to brand you instead. Operating within someone else\u2019s frame is always more difficult than operating within a frame that you yourself have set. Think of your group\u2019s brand as water spewing out of a hose. You can either leave the hose on the ground, or you can pick it up and direct its flow. Either way, the water continues to flow \u2014 and if you don\u2019t pick up the hose, someone else will!\n\nBranding is an opportunity to shape your message and ultimately use the power of that message, its meaning, and its delivery to win the war of ideas. There\u2019s no such thing as an unbranded campaign or movement \u2014 though there are plenty of examples of poorly branded ones. <em>Brand or be branded!<\/em>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\nBranding doesn't come without controversy. While some brands may prefer to \"play it safe,\" other brands recognize the importance of standing up for what is good and humane in the world. Nike chose to make its views and values very public when the brand aligned itself with American Civil rights Activist and football quarterback, Colin Kaepernick. Explore the branding implications of this endorsement more in the student op-ed below.\n\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--key-takeaways\"><header class=\"textbox__header\">\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">Student Op-Ed: Nike's Endorsement of Colin Kaepernick<\/p>\n\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\n\nNike is a brand recognized globally. The company is a cultural phenomenon and has made a big impact on sports and athletic wear. The Nike \u201cswoosh\u201d can be seen in every major league sport. And because of its enormous worldwide influence, being chosen to represent the brand is a call that every athlete hopes to receive.\n\nIn 2016, Colin Kaepernick, who was at the time the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, refused to stand for the American national anthem in protest of racial discrimination in America (Mathers, 2019). This led to many other high-profile athletes kneeling during the American national anthem, and eventually high school students began to as well.\n\nControversy followed Kaepernick as the NFL began to voice their disapproval of his stance. US President Donald Trump himself took to Twitter to reprimand athletes who did not want to stand during the national anthem. Kaepernick continued to protest for the rest of the season and was criticized by fans and NFL sponsors alike. Though a competent and admired player, in 2017 he was not signed to play for the following season.\n\nIn 2018, Nike signed Kaepernick to be the face of its newest, \u201cJust Do It\u201d campaign. This was met with significant backlash and many opposing consumers took to the internet to show videos of them defacing their Nike apparel. Despite some consumer backlash, Nike's stocks went up 5 per cent after signing Kaepernick and their online revenue was up by 31 per cent (Kelleher, 2018).\n\nUndoubtedly Nike took a risk by signing Kaepernick: they knew this endorsement deal with alienate a portion of their consumer market. A brand also distinguishes one product from another in the eyes of the customer. All of its elements (i.e., logo, colour, shape, letters, images) work as a psychological trigger or stimulus that causes an association to all other thoughts we have about this brand. Jingles, celebrities, and catchphrases are also oftentimes considered brands.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The word \u201cbrand\u201d is derived from the Old Norse \u2018brand\u2019 meaning \u201cto burn,\u201d which refers to the practice of producers burning their mark (or brand) onto their products. Italians are considered among the first to use brands in the form of watermarks on paper in the 1200s. However, in mass-marketing, this concept originated in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century with the introduction of packaged goods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">During the Industrial Revolution, the production of many household items, such as soap, was moved from local communities to centralized factories to be mass-produced and sold to the wider market. When shipping their items, factories branded their <em>logo<\/em> or insignia on the barrels used, thereby extending the meaning of \u201cbrand\u201d to that of trademark. This enabled the packaged goods manufacturers to communicate that their products should be trusted as much as local competitors. In consumer markets, branding can influence whether consumers will buy the product. You do that by emulating the characteristics and values that your customers desire. Branding is present throughout everything your organization touches\u2014it is not just a logo. Every design shown and communication made to the consumer are examples of branding.<\/p>\n<h1>Branding Attributes<\/h1>\n<p>Brands have intrinsic and extrinsic attributes. <strong><a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_93_255\">Intrinsic attributes<\/a><\/strong> refer to functional characteristics of the brand: its shape,\u00a0performance, and physical\u00a0capacity\u00a0(e.g. Gillette razors shave unwanted hair and are able to do so more closely than most products in their product class because of their curved shape). Should any of these attributes be changed, they will not function in the same way or be the same product.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of <strong><a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_93_250\">extrinsic attributes<\/a><\/strong> are features like the\u00a0price of the Gillette razors, their packaging, the Gillette brand name, and mechanisms that enable consumers to form associations that give meaning to the brand. For example, it can appear more desirable because David Beckham, who is a brand himself, advertises it.<\/p>\n<p>Some refer to a brand&#8217;s function as the creation and communication of a multidimensional character of a product\u2014one that is not easily copied and damaged by competitors&#8217; efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Brands have different elements, namely brand personality (functional abilities), brand skill (its fundamental traits\u2014e.g. Chanel No 5 is seen as sexy) and brand relationships (with buyers) or brand magic. These elements are what give the brand added value.<\/p>\n<p>Marketing and\u00a0advertising\u00a0are about selling your products and\u00a0services. Branding is about selling everything associated with your organization . The consumer perception of brands is brand knowledge: <strong><a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_93_244\">brand awareness<\/a><\/strong>, recognition and recall, and brand image denote how consumers perceive a brand based on quality and attitudes towards it and what stays in their memory.<\/p>\n<h1>Successful Brand Strategies<\/h1>\n<p>A successful brand can create and sustain a strong, positive, and lasting impression in the mind of a consumer. Brands provide external cues to taste, design, performance, quality, value, and prestige if they are developed and managed properly. Brands convey positive or negative messages about a product, along with indicating the company or service to the consumer, which is a direct result of past advertising, promotion, and product reputation.<\/p>\n<p>According to brand experts, marketers should be paying attention to the associations consumers develop in connection to a brand. <strong><a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_93_242\">Brand associations<\/a><\/strong> are considered to be anything (e.g., sounds, smells, words, and images) that can be linked to a brand and is held in memory by consumers. Brand associations can be positive or negative depending on a consumer&#8217;s direct experiences or impressions of a brand. Low and Lamb Jr (2000) tell us that brand associations are critical for marketers because they help establish differentiation, market position, and brand strategies including product line extensions. A successful organization also recognizes that brand associations are made at each point of contact: customer service calls; greetings from a receptionist; conversations with a sales person. Each of these touch points leaves a lasting impression on a consumer and can be held in memory for a long time. For that reason, an organization&#8217;s brand strategy should consider the impact employees at all levels will have on brand associations.<\/p>\n<p>Learn more about how attributes, benefits, values, culture, personality, and the user all factored into a brand strategy. Some brands may be &#8220;quirky&#8221; or &#8220;casual,&#8221; &#8220;edgy&#8221; or &#8220;intense&#8221;.<br \/>\n<em>Mercedes&#8217; personality may be described as sophisticated, serious, buttoned-up, and achievement-oriented.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>User: Every brand is designed with a particular type of user in mind: through its various attributes, a brand suggests who that user might be and what makes them attracted to the brand.<br \/>\n<em>A Mercedes-Benz driver strives to be taken seriously in everything they do. They approach their work with a growth-mentality and are committed to being successful, hard-working, and results-oriented.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"solomon-ch08_s01_f01\" class=\"figure medium editable block\">\n<h1 id=\"solomon-ch08_s01_s04\" class=\"section\">Benefits of a Brand<\/h1>\n<p>A brand is the personality that identifies a product, service or company (name, term, sign, symbol, design, or combination thereof); it also represents a relationship to key constituencies: customers, staff, partners, investors etc. Proper branding can yield higher product sales, and higher sales of products associated with the brand (or brand association). For example, a customer who loves Pillsbury biscuits (and trusts the brand) is more likely to try other products the company offers, such as chocolate chip cookies.<\/p>\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--key-takeaways\">\n<header class=\"textbox__header\">\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">Why Be Generic When You Can Be Branded?<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">Consumers may view branding as an aspect of products or services, as it often serves to denote certain attractive qualities or characteristics. From the perspective of brand owners, branded products or services also command higher prices. Where two products resemble each other, but one of the products has no associated branding (such as a generic, store-branded product), people may often select the more expensive branded product on the basis of the quality or reputation of the brand or brand owner. Benefits of good brand recognition include facilitating of new product acceptance, enabling market share penetration by advertising, and resisting price erosion.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Some people distinguish the psychological aspect of brand associations (e.g., thoughts, feelings, perceptions, images, experiences, beliefs, attitudes, etc.) that become tied to the brand from the experiential aspect\u2014the sum of all points of contact with the brand, otherwise known as <strong><a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_93_274\">brand experience<\/a><\/strong>. Brand experience is a brand&#8217;s action perceived by a person. The psychological aspect, sometimes referred to as the\u00a0<strong><a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_93_245\">brand image<\/a><\/strong>, is a symbolic construct created within the minds of people, consisting of all the information and expectations associated with a product, service, or company providing them .<\/p>\n<p>Effective branding of a product also enables the consumer to easily identify the product because the features and benefits have been communicated effectively. This will increase the probability that the product will be accessible and therefore purchased and consumed. Dunkin\u2019 Donuts (<em>rebranded now as just, &#8220;Dunkin'&#8221;<\/em>), for example, is a brand that has an established logo and imagery that is familiar to most consumers. The vivid colors and image of a DD cup are easily recognized and distinguished from competitors.<\/p>\n<p>Branding helps create loyalty, decreases the risk of losing market share to the competition by establishing a differential advantage, and allow premium pricing that is acceptable by the consumer because of the perceived value of the brand. Good branding also allows for effective targeting and positioning. For example, Adidas is a brand known its athletic and fashionable clothing, sporting equipment, and footwear. Adidas has a global brand community due to its established global branding that communicates value.<\/p>\n<div class=\"textbox shaded\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_1731\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1731\" style=\"width: 205px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1731 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/accessibilitytoolkit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/349\/2021\/06\/jakob-owens-HGqAIGg1Qcs-unsplash-scaled-1.jpg\" alt=\"Person's foot, wearing Addidas Superstar shoes; white with black stripes.\" width=\"205\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1731\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Adidas logo is widely recognized around the world for sports apparel, clothing, and footwear.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Brand Loyalty<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p>In marketing, <strong><a class=\"glossary-term\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"definition\" href=\"#term_93_246\">brand loyalty<\/a><\/strong> refers to a consumer\u2019s commitment to repurchase or otherwise continue using a particular brand by repeatedly buying a product or service. The American Marketing Association (&#8220;AMA&#8221;) defines brand loyalty as: &#8220;[t]he situation in which a consumer generally buys the same manufacturer-originated product or service repeatedly over time rather than buying from multiple suppliers within the category&#8221; (MBN, n.d.). This is expressed as a form of &#8220;habit-buying&#8221; where consumers purchase the same brand due to a &#8220;lack of dissatisfaction&#8221; (MBN, n.d.). Brand loyalty, however, is not just a form of habit-buying, but also the result of the relationship consumers build with a brand resulting in repeat and dedicated purchases that provide a deeper sense of personal fulfillment and satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from a consumer\u2019s willingness or even desire to repurchase a brand, true brand loyalty exists when a consumer is committed to the brand, and when a consumer has a high relative attitude toward the brand, which is then exhibited through repurchase behaviour. For example, if Micah has brand loyalty to Company A, they will purchase Company A\u2019s products even if Company B\u2019s products are cheaper and\/or of a higher quality.<\/p>\n<p>Brand loyalty is viewed as a multidimensional construct, determined by several distinct psychological processes, such as the customers\u2019 perceived value, brand trust, satisfaction, repeat purchase behaviour, and commitment. Commitment and repeat purchase behaviour are considered as necessary conditions for brand loyalty, followed by perceived value, satisfaction, and brand trust.<\/p>\n<p>Philip Kotler (2016) defines four customer-types that exhibit similar patterns of behaviour:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Hardcore Loyals<\/em>, who buy the brand all the time;<\/li>\n<li><em>Split Loyals<\/em>, loyal to two or three brands;<\/li>\n<li><em>Shifting Loyals<\/em>, moving from one brand to another;<\/li>\n<li><em>Switchers<\/em>, with no loyalty (possibly \u201cdeal-prone,\u201d constantly looking for bargains, or \u201cvanity prone,\u201d looking for something different).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The benefits of brand loyalty are longer tenure (or staying a customer for longer), and lower sensitivity to price. Recent research found evidence that longer-term customers were indeed less sensitive to price increases. According to Andrew Ehrenberg, consumers buy \u201cportfolios of brands.\u201d They switch regularly between brands, often because they simply want a change. Thus, \u201cbrand penetration\u201d or \u201cbrand share\u201d reflects only a statistical chance that the majority of customers will buy that brand next time as part of a portfolio of brands. It does not guarantee that they will stay loyal.<\/p>\n<p>By creating promotions and loyalty programs that encourage the consumer to take some sort of action, companies are building brand loyalty by offering more than just an advertisement. Offering incentives like big prizes creates an environment in which customers see the advertiser as more than just the advertiser. Individuals are far more likely to come back to a company that uses interesting promotions or loyalty programs than a company with a static message of \u201cbuy our brand because we\u2019re the best.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"solomon-ch08_s01_s04\" class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--key-takeaways\">\n<header class=\"textbox__header\">\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">Branding Beyond Consumerism<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\n<p>Branding is a dirty word for many activists, but it really just means \u201cthe set of expectations, memories, stories, and relationships that, taken together, account for a consumer\u2019s decision to choose one product or service over another&#8221; (Godin, 2009). If we take branding out of the realm of consumption and into the interplay of ideas in the public sphere, then we see that the tools of branding can be used for more than just selling soap.<\/p>\n<p>Three important points to keep in mind about branding:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>Branding isn\u2019t inherently \u201ccorporate.\u201d<\/em> Branding is really nothing more than a set of proven principles for associating, in the collective imagination, a certain word, phrase or image with a set of emotions or ideas. There\u2019s nothing inherently capitalist about that. Corporations use branding because it works. Anti-corporate activists can use it, too.<\/li>\n<li><em>Branding can make the difference between success and failure.<\/em> Every movement wants its message to be heard, but simply being right won\u2019t sell your ideas. The human mind needs to be persuaded.<\/li>\n<li><em>There are copious examples of movements using branding effectively.<\/em> In the \u201990s, for instance, an adherence to a certain aesthetic helped unify the Otpor! youth movement that swept Serbia and ousted Slobodan Milo\u0161evic.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Whatever the context, if you craft your message for your intended audience, then that audience will want to know more. It\u2019s as simple as engaging people in a dialogue that appeals to them. If they feel you aren\u2019t talking to them, they\u2019ll ignore you \u2014 or worse, work against you.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll be branded whether you like it or not, so be proactive. Even conspicuously \u201cunbranded\u201d campaigns have a brand. Despite its efforts to avoid defining itself, the Occupy movement ended up with an effective brand when the \u201c99%\u201d meme organically emerged as the touchstone for people within and outside the movement.<\/p>\n<p>If you decline to brand yourself, you leave an opening for other people \u2014 including enemies \u2014 to brand you instead. Operating within someone else\u2019s frame is always more difficult than operating within a frame that you yourself have set. Think of your group\u2019s brand as water spewing out of a hose. You can either leave the hose on the ground, or you can pick it up and direct its flow. Either way, the water continues to flow \u2014 and if you don\u2019t pick up the hose, someone else will!<\/p>\n<p>Branding is an opportunity to shape your message and ultimately use the power of that message, its meaning, and its delivery to win the war of ideas. There\u2019s no such thing as an unbranded campaign or movement \u2014 though there are plenty of examples of poorly branded ones. <em>Brand or be branded!<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Branding doesn&#8217;t come without controversy. While some brands may prefer to &#8220;play it safe,&#8221; other brands recognize the importance of standing up for what is good and humane in the world. Nike chose to make its views and values very public when the brand aligned itself with American Civil rights Activist and football quarterback, Colin Kaepernick. Explore the branding implications of this endorsement more in the student op-ed below.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--key-takeaways\">\n<header class=\"textbox__header\">\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">Student Op-Ed: Nike&#8217;s Endorsement of Colin Kaepernick<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\n<p>Nike is a brand recognized globally. The company is a cultural phenomenon and has made a big impact on sports and athletic wear. The Nike \u201cswoosh\u201d can be seen in every major league sport. And because of its enormous worldwide influence, being chosen to represent the brand is a call that every athlete hopes to receive.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, Colin Kaepernick, who was at the time the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, refused to stand for the American national anthem in protest of racial discrimination in America (Mathers, 2019). This led to many other high-profile athletes kneeling during the American national anthem, and eventually high school students began to as well.<\/p>\n<p>Controversy followed Kaepernick as the NFL began to voice their disapproval of his stance. US President Donald Trump himself took to Twitter to reprimand athletes who did not want to stand during the national anthem. Kaepernick continued to protest for the rest of the season and was criticized by fans and NFL sponsors alike. Though a competent and admired player, in 2017 he was not signed to play for the following season.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, Nike signed Kaepernick to be the face of its newest, \u201cJust Do It\u201d campaign. This was met with significant backlash and many opposing consumers took to the internet to show videos of them defacing their Nike apparel. Despite some consumer backlash, Nike&#8217;s stocks went up 5 per cent after signing Kaepernick and their online revenue was up by 31 per cent (Kelleher, 2018).<\/p>\n<p>Undoubtedly Nike took a risk by signing Kaepernick: they knew this endorsement deal with alienate a portion of their consumer market.
