{"id":1706,"date":"2020-09-18T16:39:14","date_gmt":"2020-09-18T16:39:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/introtourism2e\/chapter\/10-conclusion\/"},"modified":"2023-11-20T16:35:12","modified_gmt":"2023-11-20T16:35:12","slug":"10-conclusion","status":"publish","type":"chapter","link":"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/introtourism2e\/chapter\/10-conclusion\/","title":{"raw":"10.6 Conclusion","rendered":"10.6 Conclusion"},"content":{"raw":"Numerous studies suggest society will face increasing pressure for scarce resources and a changing natural environment due to habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change (Hardin, 1968; Mercer, 2004; Williams &amp; Ponsford, 2008; Wong, 2004; World Tourism Organization, 2008b). The\u00a0tourism industry must recognize its considerable contribution to this global challenge and take\u00a0aggressive steps to mitigate the impacts.\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_1705\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"700\"]<img class=\"wp-image-1705\" src=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/introtourism2e\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/315\/2020\/09\/Beautiful-Bertram-Beach.jpg\" alt=\"Deciduous trees lining a picturesque lakeshore.\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/> Figure 10.13 Bertram Beach near Kelowna, one of many B.C. sites the industry should strive to keep beautiful.[\/caption]\r\n\r\nOn a global scale, the tourism industry needs to recognize its release of significant carbon emissions and explore ways to reduce these while maintaining the mobility needed for travel. On a local scale, tourism stakeholders need to recognize the risk they pose to the destruction of local pristine environments and take steps to ensure the sustainability of their operations. Only by working together\u00a0can we ensure a\u00a0future for tourism and our society as a whole.\r\n\r\nThis chapter has addressed a major risk\u00a0to the tourism industry\u00a0\u2014 the threat of environmental impacts and disasters on businesses and communities. <a class=\"internal\" href=\"\/introtourism2e\/part\/risk-management-and-legal-liability\/\">Chapter 11<\/a> addresses the concept of risk management\u00a0and legal liability in the industry.\r\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--key-takeaways\"><header class=\"textbox__header\">\r\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">Key Terms<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/header>\r\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>BC Parks:<\/strong> the agency responsible for management of provincial parks in British Columbia<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Carbon offsetting:<\/strong> a market-based system that provides options for organizations to invest in green initiatives to offset their own carbon emissions<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Carrying capacity:<\/strong> the maximum number of a given species that can be sustained in a specific habitat or biosphere without negative impacts<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Crown land:<\/strong> land owned and managed by either the provincial or federal governments; Why is it important?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>How can you as an individual make a real change to mitigate consumptive behaviour?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Relating these principles to tourism, how would you implement them in a tourism company?<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--exercises\"><header class=\"textbox__header\">\r\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">Case Study: Qat'muk \/ Jumbo Mountain Resort<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/header>\r\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\r\n\r\nThe proposed Jumbo Mountain Resort within Ktunaxa Territory near Invermere BC had long been one of the most controversial tourism developments in BC. Proponents claimed that it will add a world-class skiing resort product to the economy. Opponents argue that the environmental impacts are not worth the limited economic return it offers, including threatening grizzly bears and other sensitive species (Lavoie, 2014). The Ktunaxa Nation did not consent to the development and fought the proposal in court. Ultimately, the Nation was victorious in court, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/ourtrust.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/downloads\/Jumbo-Qatmuk-IPCA-MR-January-20-2020-final.pdf\">final statement from the Ktunaxa Nation, including outcome of the 2020 decision [PDF]<\/a>, may be found online.\r\n\r\nThe planning process for the resort had taken over 20 years with initial permits issued in 2004. Since then the project faced several delays in order to clear conditions of its environmental assessment, one of which was to receive consent from the Ktunaxa Nation. In December 2014, the project was delayed again as the government asked for more time to evaluate whether the newly poured foundations for lodge buildings were located in avalanche zones (Shaw, 2014). Ultimately, the proposed ski resort area became part of a new Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area spanning approximately 70,000 hectares.\r\n\r\nConduct your own research about Qat'muk and the originally proposed Jumbo Mountain Resort using a minimum of three sources, and answer the questions below.\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>What are some of the negative socio-cultural and environmental impacts listed by those opposed to the resort?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>How might those impacts have been mitigated? On a local scale, tourism stakeholders need to recognize the risk they pose to the destruction of local pristine environments and take steps to ensure the sustainability of their operations. Proponents claimed that it will add a world-class skiing resort product to the economy. Opponents argue that the environmental impacts are not worth the limited economic return it offers, including threatening grizzly bears and other sensitive species (Lavoie, 2014). The Ktunaxa Nation did not consent to the development and fought the proposal in court. Ultimately, the Nation was victorious in court, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/ourtrust.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/downloads\/Jumbo-Qatmuk-IPCA-MR-January-20-2020-final.pdf\">final statement from the Ktunaxa Nation, including outcome of the 2020 decision [PDF]<\/a>, may be found online.<\/p>\n<p>The planning process for the resort had taken over 20 years with initial permits issued in 2004. Since then the project faced several delays in order to clear conditions of its environmental assessment, one of which was to receive consent from the Ktunaxa Nation. In December 2014, the project was delayed again as the government asked for more time to evaluate whether the newly poured foundations for lodge buildings were located in avalanche zones (Shaw, 2014). Ultimately, the proposed ski resort area became part of a new Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area spanning approximately 70,000 hectares.<\/p>\n<p>Conduct your own research about Qat&#8217;muk and the originally proposed Jumbo Mountain Resort using a minimum of three sources, and answer the questions below.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What are some of the negative socio-cultural and environmental impacts listed by those opposed to the resort?<\/li>\n<li>How might those impacts have been mitigated?
