By highlighting certain events repeatedly, they create a sense of urgency about those issues even though this is not always an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecivilian.co.nz\/more-than-10000-feared-dead-in-page-4-news-event\/\">accurate reflection of reality<\/a>.\r\n\r\n<strong>Reality<\/strong> is what is actually happening in the world pertaining to the economy, society, politics and science. The <strong>media selectively highlights<\/strong> certain events and gives them prominence. The criteria for the selection depends very much on the ideology of the media editors and their vested interests. By highlighting certain events an uncritical audience will perceive and construct the mediated reality as reality. One example is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/uknews\/royal-wedding\/\">royal wedding<\/a> of Prince William to Kate Middleton, which mesmerised the world, including parts of the world that have no connection to the British monarchy. Discerning audiences may well ask why the wedding of two people, who are in no way related to them, is important enough to justify worldwide <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/uknews\/royal-wedding\/8485152\/Royal-wedding-round-the-world.html\">media attention,<\/a> or indeed, how and why it might be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nzwomansweekly.co.nz\/your-stories\/weekly-people\/new-zealands-own-william-and-kate\/\">relevant to them?<\/a>\r\n\r\nThe <a title=\"Glossary\" href=\"\/mediastudies101\/back-matter\/glossary\/#agendasetting\">agenda setting<\/a> theory was formally developed by McCombs and Shaw (1972) when they studied the US Presidential Election of 1968. Their analysis of the news and media coverage found a strong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8B271L3NtAw\">correlation <\/a>to the opinions held by the voters in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
