Most Canadian agencies borrow the following definition from the US government\u2019s Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).\r\n\r\n<em><img class=\"wp-image-202 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/peersupport\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/391\/2022\/03\/BC-Campus-M7-trauma-healing-v4.jpg\" alt=\"healing centered connection\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/>According to SAMHSA\u2019s Concept of Trauma and Guidance for a Trauma-Informed Approach (2014)<\/em>, trauma-informed agencies:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>REALIZE<\/strong> the widespread impact of trauma and understand potential paths for healing.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>RECOGNIZE<\/strong> the signs and symptoms of trauma in clients, staff, and others involved with the system.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>RESPOND<\/strong> by fully integrating knowledge about trauma into policies, procedures, practices, and settings.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Actively<strong> RESIST RETRAUMATIZATION<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--exercises\"><header class=\"textbox__header\">\r\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">For Reflection<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/header>\r\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>You\u2019ll notice in the second bullet point it says \u201cclients, staff, and others involved within the system. That means everyone.
