Recognize what you can and can\u2019t do, given the limitations of your role, and be clear with others. Refer students as appropriate and access your own support when needed. While you can be an empathetic listener and help connect a student to the proper resources, you are never expected to take on the role of a counsellor or to \"fix\" a person. There are services and supports to help a student at risk of suicide.\r\n\r\nTo conclude your conversation, let the student know you are glad they came to talk to you. You could say:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>\u201cI\u2019m glad you told me\u2026\"<\/li>\r\n \t<li>\u201cI can\u2019t do that, but I can do this\u2026.\"<\/li>\r\n \t<li>\u201cI\u2019m happy you chose to talk to me, and we need to talk about a transition plan because I\u2019m not a counsellor. I\u2019m struggling here because this is out of my depth. Ask them to rate themselves on a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being very little confidence and 10 being very confident). Tell them that this is information that is meant only for them and they will not be asked to share it.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"pdf\"><img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-199\" src=\"https:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/suicideawareness\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/348\/2021\/07\/Slide52-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/div>\r\n<p class=\"p1\">To end the session on a positive note, ask participants to share what they found most valuable in the session. Taking time after a session to debrief is important.\r\n\r\nIf you have co-facilitated the session, take some time to talk about what happened during the session so you can then let go and move on. If you have facilitated the session on your own, consider talking to a colleague or friend to debrief.\r\n\r\nHere are some debriefing questions you may want to ask yourself after you\u2019ve completed a session.\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>What was a positive moment or success in this session?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>How did the learners engage with the different activities? Are there activities or discussions that I would change for next time?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Did I or a learner seem to have a response to the material, a shared story or another learner that was challenging? If so, how was it responded to or resolved?<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Is there something I want to do differently next time? Is there something that would be helpful for me to learn about or check with a co-worker about?<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nIf you feel overwhelmed by anything from the session, talk to a counsellor on your campus. Taking time after a session to debrief is important.<\/p>\n<p>If you have co-facilitated the session, take some time to talk about what happened during the session so you can then let go and move on. If you have facilitated the session on your own, consider talking to a colleague or friend to debrief.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some debriefing questions you may want to ask yourself after you\u2019ve completed a session.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What was a positive moment or success in this session?<\/li>\n<li>How did the learners engage with the different activities? Are there activities or discussions that I would change for next time?<\/li>\n<li>Did I or a learner seem to have a response to the material, a shared story or another learner that was challenging? If so, how was it responded to or resolved?<\/li>\n<li>Is there something I want to do differently next time? Is there something that would be helpful for me to learn about or check with a co-worker about?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you feel overwhelmed by anything from the session, talk to a counsellor on your campus.
