The symbols in circles indicate hazard classes and divisions set by WHMIS. These are generally found on products that are usually sold in large quantities to manufacturers and contractors, and they must carry the correct labels. The hazard symbols in triangles are set by Consumer and Corporate Affairs. The explosion symbol is often found on small consumer containers of products stored under pressure. Bottles of compressed gas, propane, and other gases must be handled with extreme care. Protective caps should be kept on the tanks when they are not in use. Whether the tank is full or empty, it still contains tremendous pressure.\r\n<h2>Class B - Flammable and Combustible Material<\/h2>\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_38\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"193\"]<a href=\"http:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/workplacesafety\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/105\/2015\/05\/classb.png\"><img width=\"193\" height=\"99\" class=\"size-full wp-image-38\" alt=\"lammable and combustible material symbol. \" src=\"http:\/\/opentextbc.ca\/workplacesafety\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/105\/2015\/05\/classb.png\" \/><\/a> Figure 6. Flammable and combustible material symbol (Used with permission of WorkSafeBC)[\/caption]\r\n\r\nIn this class are solids, liquids, and gases capable of catching fire or exploding in the presence of a source of ignition (Figure 6).\r\n\r\nThere are six divisions within Class B:\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Division 1: flammable gases<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Division 2: flammable liquids<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Division 3: combustible liquids<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Division 4: flammable solids<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Division 5: flammable aerosols<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Division 6: reactive flammable materials<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nExamples: White phosphorus, acetone, and butane. <strong>Flammable<\/strong> liquids such as sterno is more easily ignited than combustible liquids such as lamp oil for fondues.\r\n\r\nWhen concentrations of flammable liquids are present, there is a great risk of these fumes being ignited by an open flame or spark. Fire extinguishers should also be on hand and in operating order.
