About This Directory

This is one of many support resources from BCcampus Open Education.
Also see the OER by Discipline Directory and Post-Secondary Directory.

Welcome to the BCcampus Open Education Virtual Lab and Science Resource Directory. This support resource provides curated lists of free virtual science resources organized by discipline.

This is an ongoing resource to which information will be updated as needed. Each chapter includes a “Last update” posted at the top of the page and, because it is changed frequently, ISBNs are not provided for this guide in accordance with the ISBNs’ User Manual.

Purpose

This directory was created in response to the post-secondary science community’s requests for help with the hands-on portions of their courses in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Virtual labs and science resources were identified by BCcampus, then vetted by subject matter experts. The resources in this directory are intended to support remote science education, either by supplementing concepts or replacing physical labs.

Reviewers

This directory would be significantly less useful without the contributions of subject matter experts, who were sourced from B.C. science articulation committees and paid honoraria. BCcampus would like to extend thanks to the following reviewers:

  • Matt Berry, Capilano University
  • John Canal, Simon Fraser University
  • Jennifer Kirkey, Douglas College
  • Patrick Montgomery, Camosun College
  • Peter Mulhern, University of the Fraser Valley
  • Mark Paetkau, Thompson Rivers University
  • Meena Sharma, University of the Fraser Valley
  • Tara Stehelin, Yukon University
  • Kim Theriault, Vancouver Island University
  • Derek Turner, Douglas College

About BCcampus Open Education

BCcampus Open Education began in 2012 as the B.C. Open Textbook Project with the goal of making post-secondary education in British Columbia more accessible by reducing students’ costs through the use of open textbooks and other OER. BCcampus supports the post-secondary institutions of British Columbia as they adapt and evolve their teaching and learning practices to enable powerful learning opportunities for the students of B.C. BCcampus Open Education is funded by the British Columbia Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills & Training, and the Hewlett Foundation.

Open educational resources (OER) are defined as teaching, learning, and research resources that, through permissions granted by the copyright holder, allow others to use, distribute, keep, or make changes to them. We consider this publication—along with our guides, slide decks, and other support materials—as a type of OER that informs faculty, staff, and students during their production or usage of open textbooks or other open educational resources.
