About the Supplement

A collection of Deep Dives and Case Studies have been developed to accompany this textbook. They are compiled in the following resource: Introduction to Psychology: Supplemental Readings and Resources.

The Deep Dives provide detailed exploration of subjects, exploring the latest scientific research and developments. The Case Studies illustrate how psychological concepts apply in real-world scenarios. These readings can be used to build assessments and projects that require critical thinking, analysis, and application of psychological principles, whether for individual learners or learner teams.

Deep Dives

Deep Dives in this textbook are structured to enrich learning for both students and instructors. Here’s how they serve this purpose:

  • Enhanced Coverage: They provide detailed exploration of subjects, allowing learners to gain a more comprehensive grasp of complex psychological concepts and theories.
  • Skill Development: Through engaging with Deep Dives, students practice critical thinking, analysis, and application of psychological principles, enhancing their academic and practical skills in psychology.
  • Current Insights: Deep Dives keep instructors informed about the latest scientific research and developments in psychology, ensuring that teaching content remains current and relevant.
  • Resource Linking: Additionally, Deep Dives connect learners to external resources, offering further background and extended learning opportunities. This includes access to academic journals, relevant articles, and multimedia content that deepen understanding and contextualise the material within real-world scenarios.

Deep Dives can be a valuable tool for deepening knowledge, refining skills, staying updated with current research, and exploring psychology beyond the confines of the textbook.

Case Studies

Case studies in this textbook are designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Here are the purposes for including case studies:

  • Application of Concepts: Each case study provides a step-by-step illustration of how psychological concepts can be applied in real-world scenarios, helping students see the relevance and utility of what they learn.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Engaging with case studies encourages students to think critically and develop problem-solving skills by analysing situations, identifying psychological principles at play, and considering possible outcomes.
  • Deepened Understanding: By examining specific examples, students can better grasp the complexities and nuances of psychological theories, leading to a deeper and more integrated understanding of the subject matter.

Overall, case studies are interesting applications of psychological theories and concepts, designed to enhance comprehension, foster critical thinking, and equip students with the ability to apply psychological concepts in various contexts. In some cases, it may help learners to read the case study first to appreciate a real world application before reading the theoretical discussion.
