Case 3: Scenario Briefing and Pre-Learning

Work through this chapter to prepare for the virtual case-based scenario. The estimated time for completing these activities is varied depending on the knowledge students have prior to engaging in the scenario. Completing all activities in their entirety may take up to 2.5 hours.

Scenario Briefing

Use the following client information to guide your preparation.

A woman in her mid-twenties.

  • Setting: Community – Client’s Home
  • Name: Taylor Tanaka
  • Age: 24 Years Old
  • Sex: Female
  • Medical History: Traumatic Brain Injury, Type 2 Diabetes
  • Current Medications: Metformin, Oxycodone, Lorazepam
  • Social History: Taylor has lived in the basement suite of her parent’s home for the last year.

Taylor Tanaka is a 24-year-old who identifies as female. Taylor sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) 2.5 years ago after being in a car accident. Prior to the accident, Taylor was an avid runner and was on the track team at her university. She was unable to continue with her studies in the business program and has been living in her parent’s basement suite for the past year.

Since the accident, she has become irritable, labile, has difficulty sleeping and motivating herself. She complains of chronic headaches that make it difficult to concentrate. She has gained 60 pounds in the last year and now weighs 205 lbs and is 5’6”. For the last 6 months, her primary care provider has been monitoring her blood glucose levels and has diagnosed her with Type 2 diabetes.

You have been asked to conduct a home visit with Taylor to provide client education on managing Type 2 diabetes.

Prerequisite Knowledge

For this case, it is anticipated that you would have basic competence in the following areas:

    • Basic vital signs assessment (adult)
    • Basic head-to-toe assessment (adult)
    • Naloxone administration in the community (SAVEME steps per the Towards The Heart recommendations listed below)
  • Cognitive Skills
    • Traumatic brain injury, Type 2 diabetes, altered mood, substance use disorder
    • Medication administration and pharmacology (metformin, lorazepam, oxycodone, naloxone)
    • SBAR communication
    • Community Nursing
    • Cultural safety
    • BCCNM Practice Standards
  • Affective Skills
    • Therapeutic communication with a client
