3 Initial Assessment Checklist

Last update: May 18, 2021

The following is a checklist that can be used to assess the production work needed for a book and to identify questions we may need to pass back to the author.

  •  Adaptation/Remix?
    • Does the resource include text adapted or remixed from other sources? If so, is this content attributed properly? (See the chapter Attributions.)
  • Book structure
    • Is the book grouped into Parts and Chapters in a way that makes sense?
    • Is the book structured in a way that makes it easy to navigate? (For example, very long chapters can be hard to navigate without internal links or collapsed headings.)
    • Do parts/chapters follow a consistent structure? (For example, each chapter starts with learning objectives and ends with a summary and exercises).
  • Glossary terms
    • Are glossary terms set up in the glossary tool?
    • Are glossary terms and definitions consistent in their use of capitalization and periods?
    • Is bold only used throughout the text to indicate the presence of a glossary term?
  • Headings
    • Do chapter and part headings always start at a heading 1?
    • Are headings used sequentially to indicate relationships between topics?
    • Are headings capitalized consistently? (Sentence case or Title Case)
  • Images
    • Are images accessible? (See the Accessibility chapter’s section on Images)
    • Are images attributed properly? (See the chapter Attributions.)
    • Do images display properly in the PDF?
  • Links
    • Are links accessible? (See the Accessibility chapter’s section on Links)
    • Do external links work?
    • Are there any internal links?
      • If yes, are they set up to function properly in export formats?
      • If no, would providing internal links make the book easier for students and instructors to navigate?
  • Lists
    • Are numbered and bulleted lists set up correctly (i.e., not inserted as plain text)?
    • If using numbered lists, are the sub-items set up correctly? (For example, you may need to add <ol type="a">)
  •  Math
    • Is the math content accessible? (See the Accessibility chapter’s section on Formulas)
    • Is math content displaying properly in all export formats?
  • Multimedia (video, audio, H5P)
    • Are all multimedia accessible? (See the Accessibility chapter’s section on Multimedia.)
    • Are videos and audio properly attributed at the end of each chapter? (See the chapter Attributions.)
    • Do all H5P activities include attribution information in the activity’s metadata? (See the chapter Attributions.)
    • Are all video and audio hosted externally (meaning not uploaded directly to Pressbooks)?
  • Numbering
    • Does the book use numbering systems for things like parts, chapters, images, or activities?
    • If no, would numbering any of these things make it easier for students and instructors to navigate the book?
    • If yes, is that numbering system consistent throughout the book?
  • Textboxes
    • What kind of textboxes are used for what kind of content?
    • Are textboxes used consistently throughout the book?
    • Is there any content that would benefit from being moved into a textbox?
